POSITION SUMMARY

The role is responsible for overseeing complex technical accounting functions,ensuring compliance with accounting standards and providing guidance on complex accounting matters.

 

It guides the organization through technical accounting challenges,ensuring compliance with accounting standards, includes a focus on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) disclosure and reporting, ensuring that the company meets all relevant regulatory and stakeholder requirements.  It will research and document accounting standards, provide strategic guidance during new product planning and handle accounting for new products, including financial disclosure.

 

 

MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THE ROLE

 

Technical Accounting Guidance:

  • Lead the technical accounting function, ensuring adherence to GAAP, IFRS, and other relevant accounting standards.
  • Lead and provide expertise on complex technical accounting issues, including revenue recognition, leases, financial instruments, business combinations, and consolidations.
  • Interpret and implement new accounting standards, ensuring compliance across the organization.
  • Advise senior management and stakeholders on technical accounting matters and their impact on the organization.

 

Research and Application of Accounting Standards:

  • Conduct thorough research on new and emerging accounting standards, evaluating their impact on the organization.
  • Ensure the accurate application of accounting standards across all financial reporting processes.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation on the application of accounting standards, including rationale and supporting evidence for decisions.
  • Monitor changes in accounting regulations and provide timely updates to the finance team and senior management.

 

ESG Disclosure and Reporting:

  • Lead the development and implementation of ESG reporting strategies in alignment with industry standards, regulations and company goals.
  • Ensure accurate and transparent disclosure of ESG data in financial reports and other stakeholder communications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather, verify, and report on ESG metrics.
  • Stay current on evolving ESG regulations and reporting frameworks, advising the organization on best practices and compliance requirements.
  • Prepare ESG-related sections of financial reports and ensure their integration with overall financial disclosures.

 

Accounting for New Products:

  • Oversee the accounting processes for new products, ensuring accurate recognition, measurement, and disclosure.
  • Collaborate with product development and marketing teams to integrate accounting considerations into product strategies and launch plans.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting related to new products, including disclosures in regulatory filings and internal reports

 

Policy Development:

  • Develop, update, and maintain the organization’s accounting and ESG related policies and procedures.
  • Lead the implementation of new accounting policies across the organization to adapt to the company’s evolving needs.

 

Team Leadership:

  • Provide training on technical accounting topics to the finance team and other stakeholders.
  • Promote continuous learning and improvement within the finance team.

 

Strategic Planning:

  • Collaborate with senior management to align accounting strategies with overall business objectives.
  • Support strategic initiatives by providing technical accounting insights and due diligence.

 

Stakeholder Communication:

  • Communicate technical accounting matters to non-financial stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for technical accounting queries from internal and external stakeholders.

 

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

 

Qualifications

  • University degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Professional Accounting Designation, CPA, CA
  • 8- 10 years previous experience, within Financial Services
  • Experience working in an accounting firm or in a technical accounting role within a large public company is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of IFRS – existing and future requirements
  • Experience with Workday and Workiva is an asset
  • MS Office suite of products with an emphasis on strong Excel skills
