How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

The Senior Hydrogeologist acts as a subject matter expert on hydrogeological issues and completes technical reviews of complex land development, Environmental Assessment applications, and internal projects. These reviews ensure that the hydrogeologic aspects meet policy and Regulation 166/06 under the Conservation Authorities Act requirements and the Approved CTC Source Protection Plan. 

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides senior technical advice, in accordance with prescribed delivery standards, to development and environmental assessment planners to ensure compliance with the Authority’s programs, policies and regulation requirements as well as Provincial natural heritage objectives.
  • Engages with development proponents, municipal partners, consultants, contractors, and other technical and planning staff, restoration services staff, enforcement staff and the general public regarding applications made under the Planning Act, the Environmental Assessment Act and Conservation Authorities Act.
  • Maintains effective and productive partnerships with municipal, provincial, and federal agencies and maintain positive relationships with the public, proponents, consultants, municipal staff, and other agency staff.
  • Liaises with the Oak Ridges Moraine Groundwater Program team to ensure that hydrogeologic data and interpretations within the TRCA jurisdiction are accurate and current.
  • Works with internal and external stakeholders to ensure documentation under the Clean Water Act is both accurate and current.
  • Participate on various working groups/teams to provide hydrogeological input into the preparation of watershed plans, fisheries management plans, natural heritage management reports, report cards and other research projects and initiatives undertaken by TRCA or its partners.

What will you need to succeed:

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)   

  • University degree in Hydrogeology, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related discipline
  • Professional membership in good standing with the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO) with P.Geo. designation Licensed Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario
  • Qualified Person (QPESA or QPRA) per O. Reg. 153/04 under the Environmental Protection Act

 

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience related to planning and execution of hydrogeological reviews and projects

Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies

  • Mentoring of junior hydrogeologic staff
  • Expert knowledge of hydrogeologic theories and principles, saturated and unsaturated groundwater flow, and field determinations of the properties of aquifers and aquitards
  • Expert knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements for hydrogeologic assessments in Ontario
  • Thorough knowledge of the regional hydrogeology of the Greater Toronto Area
  • Ability to identify limitations and deficiencies in hydrogeologic studies performed by others
  • Influences decisions by presenting technical information and evidence in an appealing and easy to understand manner
  • Experience applying Ontario’s environmental policies and guidelines to technical reviews
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite including online software such as MS teams, WebEx, and SharePoint
