About the Role:

The Payroll Specialist is responsible for leading in multiple financial activities relating to The Métis Nation of Ontario’s (MNO) bi-weekly payroll functions. This includes timely and accurate reporting of payroll data for the MNO employees. Other responsibilities include overseeing the processing of staff expenses, corporate credit card transactions, journal entry preparation, reconciliations, and various other accounting functions. Integrity and strong attention to detail are crucial for this role.

They also ensure all regulatory and legislative compliance procedures related to payroll are performed correctly and accurately. In some cases, the Payroll Specialist may also communicate with employees to answer any questions they might have and resolve any issues through the telephone or by email. The Payroll Specialist may also need to notify employees of any issues with payments.

What you will be doing:

  • Processing two payrolls: employees and students
  • Ensuring accurate and efficient processing of employees and student entries into various payroll software, such as (but subject to change): Ceridian Power Pay, Ceridian Dayforce, Great Plains, Netsuite, etc.
  • Processing payroll on a bi-weekly basis using MNO’s payroll software
  • Processing different calculations and adjustments per pay period, such as: termination, garnishments, checking TD1 forms, processing miscellaneous payouts, request ROE’s and review for accuracy, review all new hires in MNO’s payroll software for accuracy, review zero deductions and cheques, etc.
  • Processing pension working paper, RRSP working papers each pay period
  • Calculating and filing WSIB monthly, and processing payments
  • Calculating benefits adjustments, including long term disability and taxable benefits calculations
  • Processing journal entries for payroll processes
  • Processing Living Allowances and Tuition for Students using MNO’s payroll software
  • Preparing Payroll Reports for CFO Approval per PP
  • Process expenses on a scheduled basis
  • Collaborate with the Human Resources team on various initiatives, such as salary increases each year
  • Manual payroll entries as required
  • Full Cycle Year End Tasks for Employees/Students/Volunteers (including, verifying SIN’s processing T4’s, T2200’s, T4a’s, verifying tax matrix, etc.)
  • Additional duties as may be reasonably assigned

Qualifications:

  • A degree in accounting, business, finance, or related field
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in payroll or a similar roll
  • Working knowledge of basic accounting principles and payroll practices (experience in Ceridian PowerPay, Ceridian Dayforce, Great Plains, and/or Netsuite is an asset)
  • Membership in a Professional Payroll Association (CPA membership is an asset)
  • Expert at meeting deadlines while maintaining compliance and regulatory standards
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
