The Opportunity

Are you seeking an opportunity to join a growing brownfield team in the environmental and engineering consulting industry? McElhanney Ltd. is seeking a Senior Environmental Engineer/Scientist and member of the Contaminated Sites Approved Professional (CSAP) Society (numerical or risk-based professional). The successful candidate will be an important member of our environmental team with a focus on environment site assessment and remediation projects across a broad spectrum of sites from residential to industrial. You will work closely with professionals in our other offices across BC including Prince Rupert, Terrace, Smithers, Prince George, Victoria, Langley, Vancouver, Nanaimo and Salmon Arm in supporting our clients’ with their contaminated sites and environmental management projects. The type and size of project will vary from stand-alone environmental projects to integrated design engineering projects involving various engineering disciplines.

The successful candidate will also be an important member of McElhanney’s broader growing environmental group based across British Columbia and Alberta with the opportunity to work with a team of more than 50 environmental professionals with a wide range of expertise.

What You’ll Be Doing?
  • Providing senior leadership and mentorship to McElhanney’s brownfield environmental team, with an emphasis on helping to develop the next generation of leaders within the environmental consulting industry.
  • Supporting and managing phased environmental site assessment/staged preliminary site investigations for Clients ranging from private developers, municipalities, regional districts, provincial ministries (eg. MoTI, MIRR, etc.), federal land managers (eg. port authorities, airport authorities, etc.) and industrial clients (energy and resources, etc.).
  • Being an active participant and key team member in the development of remediation action plans, overseeing remediation projects, and preparing confirmation of remediation reports.
  • Guiding McElhanney’s team and leading Approved Professional reviews for Ministry Instrument applications (Approval-in-Principle, Certificate of Compliance, Determinations).
  • Demonstrating experience obtaining pre-approvals for technical activities such as water use, background soil determinations, etc. and release requests.
  • Participating in the planning and execution of other environmental projects and field programs (i.e. operational audits, environmental management plans, compliance monitoring, etc.).
  • Possessing a strong safety and team culture, valuing the input of all members of the team, and focusing on providing value in solving our client’s challenges.
  • Thinking outside the box – looking to provide innovative solutions within the existing regulatory frameworks by being a collaborator with our clients, partners and the regulator.
  • Providing environmental advice and solutions internally and externally to guide design and assist with planning.
  • Supporting to other departments (survey, geotechnical engineering, materials testing, and civil engineering) to learn about and develop a holistic approach to project execution.
What You’ll Bring:
  • At least 15-20 years of relevant work experience
  • Relevant University degree in Environmental Engineering or other applicable post-secondary education
  • Registration in good standing as a professional engineer, geologist, biologist, agrologist or applicable professional designation in British Columbia
  • Registration as a member in good standing with CSAP Society and demonstrated experience with CSAP submissions to ENV for legal instruments and releases
  • Demonstrated experience with proposal preparation, environmental site assessments, permitting, and reporting
  • Strong project management abilities
  • Proven report writing experience and effective communication abilities with junior and intermediate staff are essential
  • Attention to detail, and an ability to work well independently and in a team environment are essential
  • Sound business acumen, client liaison skills and a keen entrepreneurial spirit, with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability and interest to travel and work on remote projects, and willingness to work overtime and on weekends, as necessary
  • Possession of a valid BC driver’s license is required at the time of hire
