POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Mechanical Designer is responsible for new product design and sustaining activities for Caframo Consumer Products and Caframo Lab Solutions product lines. The position works as part of a cross functional product development team to design and prototype electro-mechanical systems as well as analyze and test designs, maturing them from concept to launch.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design & Development:

  • Designs parts and assemblies for new and current products from plastic and metal.
  • Creates 3D part files, manufacturing drawings, and assembly drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Improves the design of existing parts to improve manufacturability, reliability or reduce cost where required.
  • Performs tolerance stack-up, basic thermal, and stress analyses.
  • Builds and tests prototypes to ensure all essential design requirements are met.
  • Develops engineering testing plans and performs or aids in their execution.
  • Interacts with vendors and sub-contractors to specify manufacturing processes.
  • Participates in failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) of designs and processes as part of risk management.
  • Actively collaborates with manufacturing specialist on drafting and maintenance of work instructions.

Sustaining Support:

  • Maintains existing designs to comply with the latest standards and address component obsolescence.
  • Supports the production and service teams by assisting with the resolution of technical issues encountered as well as by establishing effective testing and test benches.

General Engineering:

  • Prepares engineering change requests and change orders.
  • Participates in design review process.
  • Interfaces with partners, suppliers, and subcontractors to address technical issues and requirements.
  • Provides technical leadership to junior team members.

Other:

  • Considers quality in all aspects of the job and respects procedures and norms.
  • Other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive mechanical design experience in a regulated industry.
  • Experience in mechanical design within a multidisciplinary team and mass manufacturing with contract manufacturers.


SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

  • Proficiency in 3D software, particularly SolidWorks, with a demonstrated ability to create detailed mechanical designs.
  • Previous exposure to SolidWorks PDM/Manage is a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of component manufacturing processes, including machining, sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing, injection molding, and die casting.
  • Familiar with standard mechanical practices, e.g., tolerance analysis, GD&T, DFA, and DFM.
  • A demonstrated capacity for solving problems through solid, pragmatic, and creative designs.
  • Strong understanding of quality and regulatory standards as they apply to mechanical design.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Concise and accurate technical written communication.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Self-starter that is highly motivated, creative, and able to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to build strong relationships and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to meet shared objectives.
  • Drive to consistently achieve results, even under tough circumstances.
  • Holds self and others accountable to meet commitments.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Primarily office environment with exposure to production work rooms when required.
  • Light lifting and bending.
