Who Are Paid-on-Call Firefighters

Paid-on-Call firefighters are your neighbors, your colleagues, and your friends. They are people from all walks of life who respond when paged to deal with emergencies in our community. The fire and rescue service are one of the most diverse and challenging professions. You will train for situations such as structure fires, hazardous chemical spills, vehicle collisions, ice rescue, medical emergencies, and almost any possible emergency situation in between. We aim to develop our firefighters into highly skilled and active contributing members of the community who can work efficiently in a team environment while in extreme stress situations.

What Do We Offer

Training: We provide you with life-long learning. the skills that we teach will not only help you in your firefighting work, but also in situations you may encounter day-to-day. Whether its ladders, tying knots, or helping out with basic first aid, for example these become life-long skills. 

Challenge: Firefighting offers constant challenges, both personal and professional. The satisfaction that results from meeting those challenges will change your life.

Compensation: As a Paid-on-Call department, you will be paid when called to respond to emergencies, as well as when participating in required training.

Wellness Program: Our firefighters wellness program consists of access to have access the Employee Family Assistance Program (EFAP) and Firefighter Wellness Program.

 

Applicants Must Have

Commitment: Emergencies can happen 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Firefighters are required to attend a weekly two-hour Thursday evening practice session and to attend emergency callouts whenever available.

Good Health: Firefighting is a strenuous job both physically and mentally. Applicants must be 18 years old and undergo a pre-employment medical check-up based on National Fire Protections Association (NFPA) Standards and maintain a level of physical fitness required for the position.

Pre-Employment Documents: As a standard hiring practice, all successful applicants will be required to provide a clean criminal record check, and a drivers abstract that demonstrates safe and responsible driving behaviors prior to commencing employment. 

Driver's License: A valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license. Recruits will be trained up to a Class 3 license with an air brake endorsement.

Ability to Attend Weekly Fire Practices: Fire practices are held on Thursdays from 7-9 pm. and recruits will serve a one-year probationary period. 

Reside: Must reside within 10 minutes of either Fire Hall (east or west) within the City of Wetaskiwin.
