Trisura Group is a leading and rapidly growing international specialty insurance and reinsurance group trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX: TSU) and operating in the Surety, Risk Solutions, Corporate Insurance and Reinsurance niche segments of the market.                                     SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, CEDED REINSURANCE

 

Overview

 

Reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer of Trisura Group Ltd., the Senior Vice President, Ceded Reinsurance is a strategic role within Trisura, responsible for developing and implementing a North American reinsurance strategy for the operating entities within Trisura, as well as administrating all reinsurance treaties through their lifecycle.

Located in Toronto, the successful candidate will work to develop a North American Ceded Re department that will be responsible for the structure and administration of all reinsurance placed within Trisura, analyzing insurance risk and executing the purchase of reinsurance in accordance with Trisura’s risk appetite.

The candidate will be responsible for analysis of various insurance portfolios, reinsurance structuring, negotiation and successful placement of reinsurance treaties. In this position, the candidate will collaborate closely with Trisura’s corporate leaders, contributing to the creation of submissions, marketing efforts, reinsurer audits, and internal strategy meetings. The role blends technical expertise with strategic foresight to drive efficiency and effectiveness in Trisura’s reinsurance programs.

There will also be external interaction with reinsurers and brokers, centered around the purchase of reinsurance.

The candidate needs to have full working knowledge of the Property and Casualty Insurance industry, the fundamentals of reinsurance and a knowledge of the reinsurance marketplace from previous experience. The candidate should be adept at multi-tasking and be able to apply critical thinking to complex problems. The ideal candidate will have past experience in either reinsurance underwriting, reinsurance broking, reinsurance actuarial, reinsurance purchasing or any combination of these roles.

 

 

Responsibilities

  1. Strategic Oversight:
  • Identify and evaluate reinsurance opportunities, structures, and economics and provide input to the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Underwriting Officer, Chief Risk Officer, Chief Financial Officer and Trisura executive management.
  1. Treaty Negotiation & Placement:
  • Instrumental in preparing and presenting reinsurance submissions.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, claims, and actuarial to gather pertinent data.
  • Active participant in negotiating and placing reinsurance treaties to achieve best terms and conditions available in the market.
  • Collaborate in the design phase of reinsurance treaties, analyzing and suggesting terms and clauses that would be beneficial for the company.
  1. Relationship Management:
  • Build and maintain relationships with reinsurance partners, brokers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Participate in reinsurance market meetings, conventions, and seminars.
  1. Cross-functional Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with Trisura pricing and reserving actuaries to assess portfolio risk, optimize reinsurance structure and economics, and monitor performance.
  • Collaborate with underwriting management to facilitate reinsurance audits and ensure reinsurance coverage aligns with underwriting objectives.
  • Collaborate with claims to facilitate reinsurance audits, understand claim trends, and help ensure reinsurance loss reporting obligations are met.
  1. Analytical Oversight:
  • Data-driven decision-making is at the heart of the role, requiring comprehensive analysis of portfolio risks, reinsurance market trends, and treaty performance.
  • Analysis, design and execution of new approaches to enhance maturity of catastrophe management, including modelling, monitoring/appetite and pricing.
  • Engage and educate stakeholders on reinsurance matters to ensure understanding and alignment.
  • Monitor the financial performance of reinsurance programs and assess the impact on the company’s balance sheet and income statement.
  1. Market Analysis:
  • Stay abreast of trends, developments, and changes in the reinsurance market.
  • Provide insights and recommendations based on market intelligence.
  1. Contract and Compliance Management:
  • Ensure that final treaty documentation accurately reflects the agreed-upon terms and conditions.
  • Ensure clarity and adherence to all regulatory requirements.
  1. Leadership
  • Build and manage a high-performance team of professionals across North America.

 

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum +10 years’ experience in the insurance industry.
  • Prior experience in ceded reinsurance roles or similar is preferred.
  • Understanding of reinsurance markets, treaty structures, pricing and contracts.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making abilities.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills.
  • Proven ability to manage deadlines effectively.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Solid experience building and managing a team of professionals.

 

 

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance, Insurance, or a related field.
  • Advanced degrees and industry designations (e.g., CPCU, ARe) are a plus.
