As a Materials Engineer, you are focused on the laboratory analysis of ferrous alloys, ensuring that production and prototype parts are within established specifications and assisting in the investigation of part failures in the field. The Materials Engineer will evaluate heat-treated components as well as complete weld analysis, casting defect analysis and corrosion testing on machines dedicated to the rugged and challenging terrain of the forestry industry. To excel in this role, the Materials Engineer must be quality-driven with a collaborative approach to problem solving.

 

Job Duties

  • Facilitate failure analysis of common engineering materials due to fatigue, overload, casting defect, faulty heat treat, etc.
  • Collect, record, document all data as required.
  • Setup, calibrate and maintain all tools, equipment, systems, processes and machines which are used to perform work
  • Maintain, service, calibrate, repair, or create gauges and standards as required

 

Skills and Experience

  • Previous ferrous alloy analysis experience, including the analysis of heat-treated parts
  • Analysis tasks require collaboration with coworkers; effective communication and reasoning skills are essential when working on projects that involve multiple team members.
  • Willingness to support team members and co-op students.
  • Ability to effectively present information to internal and external individuals and groups

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in relevant education such as Metallurgical and/or Materials Engineering
  • Experience working with ASTM, CSA, AWS, ASME, API engineering codes is an asset
  • Knowledge of the microscopic evaluation of steel
  • Experience preparing samples of ferrous alloys
  • Familiarity with use of acids for micro and macro etching
  • Ability to operate Rockwell and micro-hardness testers
