The Role:

The Forest Resource Analysis Intern will be responsible for performing a diverse range of tasks, combining fieldwork with analytical duties. This one-year internship will commence from late April or early May and has the possibility of leading to fulltime employment.

The selected individual will be responsible for performing a variety of field and office work as projects require. The position will be based in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The successful candidate will be exposed to a variety of projects and given meaningful work to complete and own. The successful candidate will participate in larger team meetings and be given opportunities to grow their technical skills.

 

Potential projects you would be involved with include:

  • Environmental monitoring
  • Forest Management Planning
  • Geological mapping
  • Large-scale forest inventory development
  • Research projects related to non-timber forest values

 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field visits for data collection including vegetation identification, relative abundance and height measurement.
  • Work with various geospatial data types like LiDAR, satellite imagery, and aerial photography for mapping and analysis.
  • Execute data analysis tasks and interpret results for actionable insights related to forest resources.
  • Participate in team meetings to present findings and updates to internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate on the creation of reports, publications, and presentations that highlight the results of projects.

 

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Communicates effectively with other team members
  • Applies initiative and creativity when approaching challenges
  • Has a strong desire to meet deadlines and achieve set production levels
  • Formal training from a recognized forestry or natural resource program
  • GPS navigation and data collection
  • Plant identification
  • A valid Class G Ontario driver's license and a clean driver abstract are required
  • Standard First Aid

 

What makes you stand out as a candidate: 

  • Advanced Drone Pilot License
  • Enrollment and high performance in NRMT4217 – Advanced Remote sensing or equivalent technical skills
  • Enrollment and high performance in NRMT4212/4214 – Forest Management Planning or equivalent technical skills
  • Experience with Remsoft/Patchworks/FSOS
  • Experience with LiDAR, machine learning, and deep learning
  • Experience and proficiency with ArcGIS Pro
  • Experience and proficiency with R

Compensation:
