Position Summary

Reporting to a Fire Captain or Station Chief, the Paid per Call Firefighter is responsible for fire suppression, rescue, medical assist services and other related fire and life safety services and for fulfilling these duties rapidly, efficiently and safely under emergency conditions frequently involving considerable hazard. The Firefighter may be responsible for fire ground and emergency operations until command is assumed by an officer. They deliver programs for the prevention of fires, saving of life and property and public safety education. The work also includes routine duties, ensuring the firefighting vehicles and facilities are properly maintained, and assisting with training of other firefighters.

This staffing model meets the needs of the County and reflects the commitment of both the County and that of its various communities and residents. Core Accountabilities

  • Respond to fires, motor vehicle collisions and other emergency incidents as required. Perform a variety of rescue related duties to protect the public and lessen severity of injuries.
  • Lay and connect hose; hold nozzles and direct high pressure water streams; raise, climb and work from ladders, and use or operate all equipment associated with the control and extinguishing of fires or other incidents.
  • Drive and/or operate all vehicles or equipment as assigned.
  • Maintain an adequate level of physical fitness to continuously perform all duties required in this position including but not limited to excellent cardiovascular fitness and bending, lifting, and carrying as required.
  • Provide support, guidance and mentoring to junior members of the Fire Service.
  • Assist with on-the-job training of other Firefighters.
  • Endeavor to build a positive team atmosphere at the Fire Station and foster positive relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Maintain firefighting and medical equipment, tools, and apparatus to ensure readiness for any emergency service response.
  • Perform inspections, assessments and site evaluations related to fire prevention duties as assigned.
  • Conduct fire and life safety inspections at assigned schools and events.
  • Inspect and test fire hydrants as assigned.
  • Organize, lead and/or participate in community assignments as deemed necessary by RVFS leadership in collaboration with local community members and officials.

Position Requirements

  • Reside within 15 minutes' drive of the fire station.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License (non-GDL).
  • 5 year commercial driver’s abstract with minimal infractions.
  • Previous firefighting experience (an asset).
  • Satisfactory completion of a medical examination.
  • Clean Criminal Record.
  • Possess the physical agility and stamina sufficient to perform all functions of this position in extremely adverse conditions.
  • Possess the ability to lift heavy equipment /loads as needed (May be expected to carry equipment weighing 20 to 40 lbs up stairs while wearing protective gear weighing at least 50 lbs or to carry or rescue-drag individuals weighing over 200 lbs).
  • Possess adequate vision, hearing, mobility and dexterity to perform routine and non-routine firefighting tasks.
  • Able to maintain self-discipline and professionalism at all times.
  • Ability to react quickly and remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Available to regularly attend training and respond from the community.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience of basic computer functions (log on, check emails, open and save documents in MS Office Suite) as well as basic keyboarding skills.
