The primary objective of an Systems Administrator is to create, implement, and maintain a dependable infrastructure (Mainly on AWS). This requires ensuring consistent reliability, robust security, and unparalleled scalability to meet evolving demands.
What’s it like working as a Systems Administrator at Questrade?
The Systems Administrator will be responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining operating systems and applications on cloud servers (both Linux and Windows) in AWS cloud. They will implement security best practices, perform regular backup procedures, and monitor cloud infrastructure for performance, availability, and security incidents. Additionally, they will develop and maintain automation scripts to streamline administrative tasks and manage cloud resources efficiently, as well as ensure systems and applications are aligned with corporate policies, procedures and best practices with a strong focus on documentation and high availability.

- Install, configure, and maintain operating systems and applications.
- Support and maintain Linux (RHEL) and Windows (2016+) server systems using tools like Satellite and SCCM, Ansible, Saltstack and other automation tools
- Implement security best practices, including user access controls, firewall configuration, and data encryption on AWS.
- Perform regular system backups and disaster recovery procedures to ensure data integrity and business continuity.
- Monitor cloud infrastructure, applications, and services for performance, availability, and security incidents.
- Identify and resolve issues related to cloud infrastructure, network connectivity, and application performance.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts using tools like PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
- Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices using tools like Terraform or CloudFormation for provisioning and managing cloud resources.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation of cloud infrastructure, configurations, and processes.
- Generate reports on system performance, usage, and costs to support decision-making and optimization efforts.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule which includes performing server maintenance/updates and providing technical support after hours

- 3+ years experience in a large-scale (2000+ VMs) environment with exposure to Linux, Windows and VMWare ESXi 6+.
- Hands-on (production) experience in any Cloud provider (AWS preferred).
- Proficiency in scripting and automation using tools like PowerShell, Python, Bash, Satellite, Ansible, Saltstack and other automation tools
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) concepts and tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation).
- Solid understanding of networking principles and protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, VPN).
- Experience with monitoring and logging tools such as AWS CloudWatch
- Excellent knowledge of Active Directory, Azure AD, DNS, DHCP and Group Policy management.
- Solid networking knowledge (OSI Layers, well-known protocols) Strong documentation and presentation skills.
- Eager to learn new skills and develop new techniques
- Strong attention to detail, comprehensive problem solving and troubleshooting skills
- Must be able to effectively follow procedures and policies
- Ability to work independently or under minimum supervision Disaster Recovery/High Availability experience would be an asset
- Experience in regulated environments is an asset (SOC, ISO27001, NIT, PCI) including escalations, change and incident management.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, including presenting technology strategy to executives.
- Experience in banking and financial domains is preferred.
