Job Title: Tool Room QMC Technician

Reporting To: Tool Room Supervisor

Team/Department: Tool Room / Molding

Term: Full-Time Hourly

Location: Etobicoke

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Tool Room Supervisor, the QMC Technician is responsible for performing product changes on need basis, attending to mold issues during production, preparing molds for upcoming mold changes, performing work as defined by the mold PM program and preparing molds for storage after removal from machine. Prepare molds for upcoming changes. Perform work assigned by tool room supervisor and as defined by the mold PM program. Troubleshoot molds and start up machines after repair is completed.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Remove Mold During Product Change

  • Pre-stage all equipment and necessary tools for mold removal
  • Obtain all necessary supplies from stores prior to removing mold
  • Remove mold and all mold accessories from the machine
  • Prepare the mold to be transported to the tool room

Install Mold During Product Change

  • Pre-stage mold at machine
  • Obtain necessary supplies from stores prior to installation
  • Install the new mold by following proper procedures
  • Troubleshoot mold issues during installation process

Prepare for Storage and Installation

  • Follow the tag out procedure
  • Inspect the mold out for repairs, tool wear and damage
  • Perform repairs, clean the mold prior to storage
  • Store the mold in the proper location
  • Inspect, clean, polish the mold prior to installation

Repair and Improve Molds During Production

  • Troubleshoot molds during production
  • Check mold alignment
  • Split any mold to perform the following:
    o Replace or clean tips
    o Replace gate pads
    o Clean mold (flash)
    o Replace heaters
    o Clean cavity air
  • Block and unblock cavities when the need arises
  • Perform insert change or repairs, clean cores and gate inserts
  • Fix leaking inserts

Perform Routine Preventative Maintenance

  • Replace mold inserts, nozzle tips,
  • Check lubrication points
  • Setting and checking mold alignment

Documentation

  • Report out daily activities and update Tool Room labour board file
  • Mold Inspection checklist sheet
  • Report out daily activities and update Tooling logbook file
  • Mold preparation form

Monitor and Ensure Health and Safety / HACCP & SQF / 5S Compliance

  • Proactively identify and suggest ways to eliminate hazards sheet
  • Correct unsafe acts or conditions, ensuring health and safety policies are followed
  • Participate in safety investigations when required
  • Provide safety training when required

Molding Technical Support

  • Provide feedback and drive improvement regarding technical processes on the shop floor working with tool room supervisor and other mold techs.
  • Identify improvement opportunities
  • Manage significant workload including conflicting priorities.

Product Change Duties

  • Troubleshoot mold issues during installation process.
  • Startup mold/machine combinations with master set up sheet after repair
  • Trouble shoot process to produce quality parts at standard cycle times and obtain QC part approval
  • Hand-off running machine after repair and part approval to machine operator
  • Interpersonal skills and people management skills.
  • Understand quick mold change performance targets and how they contribute to enabling molding targets. 

Prepare and Improve Molds in Bench and/or in Machine

  • Trouble shoot molds during production
  • Split molds and conduct preparation as per FORM-MO-0055
  • Block and unblock cavities when the need arises
  • Perform insert change and repairs – related to heat, air, water, hydraulic and alignment
  • Transport molds back and forth from Toolroom, machine and storage area using reach truck.
  • Able to diagnose the problems with core shift
  • Perform work assigned by tool room supervisor.

Qualifications:

Briefly describe Education, certifications, etc. as well as experience required for the position. 3.1

Community college certificate/diploma from injection molding training institutes required.

5 years tooling and process experience in molding facility 3.3

Mechanical skills; basic electrical skills. 3.4

Flexibility to work overtime, other shifts and during long weekends based on department requirements.

Operate overhead crane for mold transportation. Certification required.

Operate the reach truck to transport mold. Certification required.

Skills and Knowledge:

Fluent in English with good verbal and written communication skills

Able to read and understand a core map

Able to diagnose the problems with core shift

Basic mechanical skills

Elementary understanding of injection molding equipment and molds

Able to complete simple and complex installations of injection molds in a safe and timely manner.
