The vision for the Northland Finance team is to develop a high functioning, effective and efficient finance function with scalable capabilities and processes to support finance operations, business growth, and compliance. The Assistant Controller- Restaurants will be responsible for providing insightful and timely financial reporting and analysis to support decision making by all senior leaders across Northland. This role is a key contributor in progressing the company towards a more comprehensive corporate accounting and business support to establish processes that deliver the right financial information to the right people at the right time.  With an emphasis on financial reporting, the Assistant Controller- Corporate will be responsible for providing overall financial support and reporting to the Director of Accounting. This role will also be responsible for the continued optimization and execution of the corporate transactions and financial oversight for Northland.

 

The ideal candidate must have a collaborative, professional, and service-oriented approach when interacting with business partners, utilizing strong communication skills and interpersonal skills and excel at leading teams.

 

Assistant Controller – Restaurant Division Responsibilities

Accounting and Financial Reporting

  • Oversee period-end and year-end closings effectively and efficiently, producing accurate financial reports in a timely manner
  • Preparing monthly profit and loss statements and various other reports to support operations
  • Ensure balance sheet reconciliations are performed on a timely basis
  • Performing other accounting duties as required

 

Business Support

  • Responsible for the successful collaboration with inter-department stakeholders (FP&A, Payroll, Tax, AP and Treasury) to allow for month, quarter and year end close activities
  • Maintain great working relationships with the business to promote synergies
  • Gain a thorough understanding around stakeholder expectations and leverage accounting resources and knowledge to meet those expectations

 

 

 

Compliance

  • Manage the year-end process including coordination with external accounting firm to run the financial statement audit process
  • Investigating and resolving any audit findings, account discrepancies, and issues of non-compliance.
  • Review and ensure all relevant taxes are filed on time for assigned legal entities

 

Process Improvement

  • Reviewing current processes and identifying opportunities for change within new ERP, focusing on process automation where possible

 

 

Training and Staff Development

 

  • Coach/develop 3 team members into the Assistant Controller and ensure all team members are supported while fulfilling their responsibilities
  • Ensuring there are clear, defined roles and responsible for training and developing

Role Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required
  • CPA designation
  • 3+ years of accounting experience post designation
  • Working knowledge of GAAP
  • Strong financial analysis skills
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly with Excel and ERP systems
  • Ability to train and manage staff
  • Ability to work with little to no supervision
