The Role

 

As a Civil Engineer specializing in Transportation, you will play a crucial role in the planning and execution of transportation infrastructure projects. Your duties will encompass various tasks, such as drafting design and tender packages, conducting quantity calculations, estimating costs, and creating detailed plans, drawings, and models for roads, highways, bridges, and other transportation systems. Working closely with a team of engineers and technologists, you'll ensure that your designs adhere to regulatory standards, client specifications, and safety measures. Additionally, you may be involved in site visits, data analysis, and offering construction technical support to aid project decision-making processes. Success in this role hinges on your strong technical abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and a solid grasp of transportation design principles.

 

The ideal candidate will have the following background, skills and attributes:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Registered or eligible for registration with APEGA as Engineer in Training or Professional Engineer.
  • 3 to 5 years of progressive consulting experience completing transportation projects for Alberta Transportation & Economic Corridors or Municipal clients.
  • Demonstrated experience with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors design guidelines and construction specifications. 
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D for drafting and design tasks.
  • Thorough understanding of transportation design standards and guidelines.
  • Ability to analyze data related to traffic flow, roadway geometry, and other relevant parameters to inform design decisions and optimize transportation systems.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with engineers, technologists, clients, and other stakeholders. This includes the ability to convey technical information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy in design calculations, drawings, and documentation, minimizing errors and potential safety hazards.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to address design challenges, adapt to changing project requirements, and find innovative solutions to complex transportation issues.
  • Basic understanding of project management principles to assist in project coordination, scheduling, and budgeting tasks.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations, codes, and standards governing transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem solving skills and ability to think creatively.
  • Ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team. 
  • Ability to work in a hybrid work environment from an office or home setting.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and have access to a vehicle with valid registration and insurance.
  • Provide a 3-year driver’s record.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

As a member of the Western Canada Infrastructure team, you will be responsible for contributing to our project teams during design and construction project phases. 

 

  • Perform quantifying calculations for transportation infrastructure projects to determine material quantities and project costs.
  • Assist in preliminary engineering activities, including conducting feasibility studies and conceptual design development.
  • Prepare tender packages, including drafting technical specifications and cost estimates for transportation projects.
  • Utilize Civil 3D Design software for creating detailed plans, drawings, and models for roads, highways, and other transportation systems.
  • Compile engineering reports summarizing design methodologies, calculations, and recommendations for project stakeholders.
