PURPOSE:

 

Reporting to the Manager of CBU Recreation Services, the Coordinator, Intramural Sports & Recreation is responsible and accountable for development and delivery of comprehensive and inclusive recreation programs to enhance the health and well-being of our students, faculty, staff and community members; and responsible for all aspects relating to the planning, operating, and maintenance of the Athletics and Recreation facilities. The hours of work for this position will be afternoons/evenings.

 

Student access and an improved student experience are key objectives of the Coordinator. The Coordinator is responsible for optimizing facility use and balancing programming requirements to allow for maximization of space. The Coordinator prepares and monitors departmental budget and provides programming to meet the varied needs of students, faculty, staff, and community members: intramural sports and recreation. The Coordinator participates in annual and long-term planning and resource allocation. This key leadership role interfaces Varsity Athletics, Recreation, campus departments, students, faculty, staff, and community groups.

This position involves a high degree of independent decision-making, responsibility, and personal initiative.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Recreation programs planning, organizing, delivery, and evaluation. Involves hiring, training, and evaluation of student staff and volunteers; organizing and delivering a safe, quality program in many fields which include: intramural sports, tournaments, special events, and open recreation; and assuming the responsibilities for communications and public relations.
  • Work closely with the Manager of CBU Recreation Services to implement a facility usage plan to best maximize facility space in support of departmental strategies.
  • Responsible for the financial planning, monitoring, and management for their program area including intramural league activities, equipment purchases, and employees.
  • Assist with the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation intramural staff such as attendants, league/tournament supervisors and officials.
  • Manage the web based IMLeagues which includes league/tournament postings, registration, schedules, and statistic reports.
  • Explore and provide opportunities to participate in less traditional and emerging sports such as ultimate frisbee, flag football, spike ball, and others.
  • Plan, manage and promote open recreation activities and ensure equipment availability.
  • Communicate effectively with open recreation participants with regard to activity schedules, cancellations, and additional opportunities.
  • Assist with the development of policies and procedures to ensure safe and fair play. Apply best practices and compliance in carrying out policies and procedures.
  • Support a culture that resolves concerns and issues in a timely fashion in accordance with appropriate compliance, policies, and procedures.
  • Develop and manage an efficient communication strategy that promotes the engagement of students, faculty, and staff in areas such as recreation programs, events, and facility availability.
  • Liaise with appropriate internal departments/organizations such as student life, creative arts, students’ union, and societies to assess student needs.
  • Promote the marketing and communications brand with an outcome of evolving healthy and active behaviours for the campus community. Use web, social media, email, print media, and other communication channels to successfully promote recreation, intramural, and club activities to students and the community. Develop printed work for Programs brochure.
  • Build a library of promotional material such as articles, photos, videos, highlighting the student experience through recreation aimed to support the recruitment and retention of CBU students.
  • Manage capital assets relating to department invoices and expenditures including equipment life and replacement planning strategy to ensure program quality and facility risk management objectives are achieved.
  • Ensure availability and set-up of equipment.
  • Coordinate regular facility and equipment checks and maintenance for the recreation facilities.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of risk management policies as they relate to Intramural sports/tournaments/special events and open sports.
  • Lead a student development program where student employees deliver the programs and manage the facilities with practical learning opportunities. Learning outcomes to include transferrable skills in leadership, customer service, conflict management, equity, diversity, inclusion, sustainability, and communication. The supervisory role includes hiring, training, and evaluating part-time student and work-study placements.
  • Prepare staff schedules and payroll forms.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager of Recreation Services.

 

QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS:

 

  • Undergraduate degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Kinesiology or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in sport, wellness, health, well-being, active living & recreation administration, facility management, and marketing & promotion skills is an asset
  • Knowledge and interest in university and community recreation development.
  • Understanding of all aspects of risk management with respect to health and safety.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and planning skills.
  • Knowledge of the local and regional community would be an asset.
  • Minimum 1-3 years related experience
