Assistant Professor, Sociology (tenure-track)

The Department of  L’nu, Political, and Social Studies in the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Cape Breton University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Sociology at the rank of Assistant Professor. This position will commence January 1, 2025(or as soon as possible thereafter).

The successful candidate’s teaching load will include sections of undergraduate introductory courses in quantitative methods, qualitative methods, as well as in the candidate’s area of specialty. As well as fulfilling degree requirements, as part of both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Community Studies Degree Programs, the quantitative and qualitative methods courses are required courses in the Diploma in Government Management program.

In addition to teaching experience, the successful candidate must also possess a well-defined research agenda related to social control including, but not limited to: critical criminology, the sociology of health and illness, or social problems. For this position, research may be academic or community-based in nature, or a combination of both approaches.

Expertise in mixed methods would be considered an asset. The successful candidate is expected to have a well-defined research program related to social control including, but not limited to critical criminology, the sociology of health and illness, or social problems. In addition to quantitative and mixed methods, there will be a responsibility to teach existing courses in areas of specialization, and to engage in curriculum development. Exceptional candidates who may not possess this minimum academic credential, but who do hold traditional and living Indigenous knowledge will also be considered.

Finally, the successful candidate will be required to participate fully in the collegial life of the university by accepting administrative duties within the department and participating on university-wide committees and governance bodies

Candidates should have a PhD in sociology or a PhD in a relevant related discipline. Candidates who are in the later stages of their PhD may be considered with the successful completion of the PhD being a condition of employment. Exceptional candidates who may not possess this minimum academic credential, but who do hold traditional and living Indigenous knowledge will also be considered.

CBU teaches programs on campus, off campus in locations across and outside of Canada, and on-line. The university and its partners will therefore provide opportunities for faculty members to teach in different modes in different locations as part of their regular workload. While these opportunities may not be available equally for all faculty positions in all programs, a clear willingness to teach in different modes and locations will be noted as part of your application.
