Position Overview: We are seeking a skilled Maintenance Lead-Hand to join our manufacturing plant team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with packaging machinery, including filling, packaging, and palletizing equipment. This role involves working closely with the Maintenance Manager to execute maintenance project activities alongside millwrights and electricians.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Execution: Assist the Maintenance Manager in coordinating project activities with millwrights and electricians while actively working on various maintenance tasks such as replacing parts, making mechanical adjustments, fabrication, and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Machinery Expertise: Troubleshoot and maintain blending, filling, and packaging machinery, ensuring minimal downtime.
  • CMMS User: Utilize CMMS software to conduct preventive maintenance (PM) work orders.
  • Technical Skills: Read and interpret technical drawings, and address electrical and mechanical issues.
  • Hands-On Work: Spend 100% of the time on the production floor, actively participating in troubleshooting, PMs, and project work.
  • Reporting: Summarize daily reports and CMMS logs, including downtime, used parts, and maintenance project status.

 

Daily Duties:

  • Maintain all equipment regularly to ensure safe and efficient operating conditions.
  • Report the usage of all spare parts so that inventory can be properly maintained.
  • Ensure that all equipment is properly lubricated at the start of and throughout the shift, as required by the preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Ensure that equipment is properly set up and on time for all production runs.
  • Make ongoing periodic checks on equipment during operation to ensure satisfactory operation with good output quality and to spot potential problems.
  • Make adjustments to equipment and replace worn parts as required, ensuring minimal downtime.
  • Ensure that implemented changes deliver the desired results and continue to work on improvements if optimal production efficiency is not achieved. Problem areas must be reported to the supervisor.
  • Make shop repairs to equipment when required.
  • Make necessary repairs using hand tools or shop equipment. Basic skills in machining and welding are required.
  • Log all relevant incidents into the maintenance log by the end of each shift.
  • Ensure that the maintenance shop and other work areas are kept neat and orderly and that all safety rules are practiced.
  • Undertake special tasks as requested by the Maintenance Manager.

 

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience with packaging machinery such as fillers, case packers, labelers, case sealers, and palletizers.
  • Strong background in mechanical, electrical, and PLC systems.
  • Proficiency in CMMS software.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Good English language skills - written and oral.
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot ladder logic and PLCs by monitoring inputs and outputs, as well as connecting a computer to a PLC for online troubleshooting.
  • Sufficient knowledge of PLCs to make minor program changes.
  • Ability to fabricate parts as required.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics, and electrical code specifications to determine the layout of industrial electrical equipment installations.
  • Ability to overhaul equipment and specify parts required.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to find and diagnose problems with equipment and decide on the correct course of action without direct supervision.
