WHAT YOU WILL DO

The General Manager, Engineering plays a critical leadership role in all engineering matters related to the investigation, study, design, and construction of airfield, landside, land development, ground transportation, facility expansion and restoration projects at the Calgary and Springbank Airports. This position is responsible for guiding the development of capital requirements for annual and long-term development programs within the framework of our Airport Master Plan and Airport Restoration Program, providing engineering expertise, overseeing project costs, and supporting the delivery of the annual capital program. The General Manager, Engineering is a key contributor to the development of various airport plans, they uphold corporate engineering standards, maintains necessary permits, and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. Lastly, the role involves collaborating with stakeholders, industry representatives, government bodies, and conducting research on engineering innovation in the context of airport facilities and civil infrastructure.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Provides leadership in all matters pertaining to engineering investigations, studies, designs and construction of airfield, landside, land development, ground transportation, facility expansion, and restoration projects at the Calgary and Springbank Airports.
  • Provides corporate responsibility to the Airport Authority for all “in-house” engineering practice, as defined by, and under the authority of, The Association and Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGA).
  • Maintains and is responsible for the “Permit to Practice”.
  • Accounts for the Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) and any updates required by APEGA. Acts as Senior Officer and Responsible Member for the Civil discipline.
  • Participates in the development of capital requirements for the annual program and long-term development programs within the framework of the Airport Master Plan and Airport Restoration Program, by providing engineering guidance, overview and cost forecasting.
  • Supports the Project Management group in the delivery of the annual capital program of assigned projects. Provides sound business and project management in the area of project delivery with focus on timeliness, end product quality, and financial accountability.
  • Participates in and/or guides the development of the Calgary Airport Master Plan, 10 Year Capital Plan, Airport Land Development Plan, Springbank Airport Master Plan and other related medium/long range airport plans and studies.
  • Oversees the planning, design, and execution of engineering projects related to airport infrastructure, including runways, taxiways, terminals, and support facilities.
  • Ensures all engineering activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including safety, environmental, and aviation standards.
  • Develops and manage the engineering department budget, ensuring efficient allocation and utilization of resources.
  • Liaises with airport authorities, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders to address engineering-related issues and requirements.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering or related technical field. Undergraduate degree required, Master’s degree considered an asset.
  • Professional Engineering or related affiliation required. 
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in airport engineering: civil, geotechnical, electrical, airfield geometry, aerodrome standards, and subsurface, surface and elevated structures.
  • Experience in project management, including PM methodology, financial budgeting & forecasting, contracting, documentation, communication and other day to day project management activities.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering materials and construction methodologies required.
  • Strong leadership skills demonstrated through previous supervisory and people management experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to deal with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Business-oriented mindset with strong judgment and strategic thinking
  • Ability to work and manage under pressure and respond to critical and/or changing priorities.
  • Strategic Management skills inclusive of planning, financial management, analysis, business development and risk analysis are required
  • Ability to successfully deliver multiple, high dollar value, projects/initiatives with competing priorities in a team environment.
  • Must be able to meet and maintain the requirements of a Safety Sensitive position, this includes pre-employment medical assessment and Drug & Alcohol testing
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC)
