The opportunity:

The Director of YMCA Camp Kitchikewana is a year-round, full time employee of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, and is responsible for the operation of the 6-month overnight camp with an operational budget of $2 million. In the spring and fall seasons, the camp operates as an outdoor centre serving school groups, adult retreats, alumni functions and rental groups and serves over 2000 participants with 10-20 seasonal staff. In the summer months, the camp offers camp sessions for children and youth ages 6-16, serving 750 campers with a staff compliment of 80 seasonal employees. The Director is required to live on site during the camping season.  YMCA Camp Kitchikewana is available by boat-access only, and is located in Georgian Bay Islands National Park.

 

In this role, you will:

  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to the mission and core values of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka and the YMCA in Canada.
  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to serving the membership, facility users and all program participants of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka.
  • Ensure that camp operations and programs are safe and of high quality. This includes, but is not limited to, meeting and maintaining the following legislation, standards and frameworks: Bill 168, AODA, YMCA Child Protection, Occupational Health and Safety Act, YMCA Camping Quality Recommended Practices, OCA Standards, OPHEA Guidelines, Ontario Reg. 503/17, all relevant legislation related to safe drinking water, food preparation, and commercial boat operation, Healthy Childhood Development, NS Healthy Adolescent Development.
  • With the support of the General Manager of Camping and Outdoor Education, provide leadership to YMCA philanthropic efforts (annual giving, capital giving, major gifts).
  • Hire, support, train, coach and supervise a team of 80 seasonal employees.
  • Recruit and book spring and fall user groups (schools, retreats, etc.). The director is responsible for facilitating information sessions at local schools and working with group leaders/teachers in developing program schedules.
  • Work with the Assistant Camp Directors and Community Care Team, to ensure a high level of customer service. This includes, managing day-to-day office duties, coordinating cabin placements, camper changeovers and staffing schedules and maintaining an effective stakeholder communication strategy.
  • Effectively manage relationships with key stakeholders (alumni, Parks Canada, volunteers, program partners, venders, etc.)
  • As a member of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka Camping and Outdoor Education Department, in fall and winter, support of other outdoor education programs may be required.
  • Participate in YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka association-wide initiatives and committees if asked.
  • Adhere to all provincial and federal legislation relevant to job description.

 

 

You bring:

  • Diploma or Degree in Recreation & Leisure, Outdoor Education, or applicable field
  • Minimum of 2-5 years supervisory experience in an overnight camp setting
  • Standard First Aid, CPR  and AED defibrillator training
  • Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard certification
  • G driver’s license (valid)
  • Operational vehicle
  • Small Drinking Water System certification
  • OCA Marine Module or Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP)
  • An understanding of YMCA Camping Quality Recommended Practices and OCA Standards
  • Willingness to participate in mandated training to be completed before or shortly after

commencement of work including:

    • AODA Training
    • Health & Safety Awareness Training
    • Bill 168 (Violence & Harassment in the Workplace) Training
    • PCI Compliance
    • WHMIS
    • Child Safeguarding Training
