The Opportunity:  
The Ottawa Citizen/Sun is looking for an experienced editor to help lead city coverage in the nation’s capital, focusing on real-time breaking news, explainers and opportunities to engage readers. You will work closely with a team of fantastic journalists, photographers and editors in Ottawa's largest newsroom to support identified strategic pillars and help drive the newspaper’s mission: to challenge Ottawa to be an inspiring world-class capital city, and a great place to live.  
The role is hands-on and high impact: your work will help guide and create journalism that matters to the citizens of Ottawa.  
If you are a journalist with exceptional communication skills, an interest in reimagining how a daily newspaper can tell stories, and a drive to produce work that makes Ottawa a better place, we’d love to hear from you.  
 
What you’ll do:  
  • Be responsible for the Ottawa Citizen newsroom’s daily coverage of breaking news and explainer storytelling  
  • Collaborate with journalists and editors to tell stories that meet our mission 
  • Participate in daily editorial meetings to update other editors on coverage plans, priorities, and ways to tell stories that connect with readers 
  • Pitch ideas and projects that align with strategic goals 
  • Spend a lot of time on the phone. As the main point of communication for a busy, digital newsroom, you’ll keep tabs on all stories, and ensure every department is looped in  
  • Assign, edit and publish stories, complete with all digital best practices, bells and whistles 
  • Oversee weekend planning and news coverage 
  • Collaborate with a small management team to handle daily operations such as scheduling, future planning, training and strategy development.  
  • Bring new ideas and interest tied to platforms, including registration, reader engagement, events, social media and newsletters  
  • Be available for occasional evening and weekend duties 

 

Who you are: 
A journalist with: 
  • exceptional reporting, writing, editing abilities; 
  • strong communication and leadership skills; 
  • sound news judgement and understanding of CP Style; 
  • an interest in innovative digital techniques to reach new readers; 
  • a champion of local news, with a deep understanding of how to use analytics to guide decision-making; 
  • a collaborative leader, who can work under pressure, juggle deadlines and inspire change within a legacy organization;  
  • and a solid understanding of SEO fundamentals, headline writing and digital news strategy. 
Qualifications:  
  • A degree in journalism or digital media production  
  • 5 years of experience working in a news or publishing environment 
  • Extensive experience with at least one of the following: video production, data visualization, SEO, or newsletter production 
  • Familiarity with the city of Ottawa is an asset 
  • Bilingualism is an asset
