Cochrane is located in the breathtaking Bow Valley corridor in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in southern Alberta. With a population of over 37,000 people, and growing steadily every year, Cochrane is a thriving town, surrounded by world-famous ranch country. Our western heritage is reflected in the Town’s architecture and our friendly people. The Town of Cochrane welcomes innovative and skilled individuals to join our team of over 250 employees.

We are excited to recruit for the position of Assessor I.  With a current population nearing 17,000 properties, this team oversees all residential and non-residential property assessments.

The Assessment team connects directly with residential, commercial and industrial property owners to determine the market value of properties and fulfill the resources required to provide Cochrane's municipal services to all residents.

Wow!  This is a busy team with always lots on the go.  They understand municipal government and legislation, bylaws, policies and procedures pertaining to assessment and taxation, building permit application process and building construction guidelines.  They have a high level of accuracy, confidentiality, and discretion while balancing multiple priorities.  Oh, and they love property Assessment!  Understanding the black and white, and carefully interpreting the grey is where they love to contribute.  The team is a group of hardworking professionals dedicated to supporting the Cochrane’s commitment to transparency, good governance and ensuring legislative requirements are met.

Are you a recent business degree graduate with a flair for real estate and a passion for diving into the world of property assessment?  Are you passionate about precision and eager to make a real impact in property assessment?  We’re excited to offer an incredible opportunity to kickstart your career as an Assessor!  If you’re eager to apply your academic knowledge and real estate experience in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, this role is perfect for you.

Cochrane is at a pivotal moment in our journey.  We are a mid-sized city - the fastest growing one in Western Canada.  Together, we are building a modern city that acknowledges the changing contexts in which we design and deliver exceptional services to our community.  Behind this effort, are our goals of creating a forward-facing public service that embraces change; is more concerned with team wins (over individual ones); and always begins with the fundamental question of “how is this in the best interests of Cochrane’s residents?”

As an Assessor I, you'll step into a key role where every day brings new challenges and opportunities.  Imagine yourself analyzing market trends, reviewing sales data, and ensuring that residential and multi-residential properties are assessed accurately and fairly.  You’ll contribute to the driving force behind maintaining our Assessment Roll and use our cutting-edge CAMAlot Assessment System to keep everything in top shape.

You’ll get hands-on experience performing property inspections, interpreting construction blueprints, and gathering crucial data.  Your real estate background will shine as you interact with property owners, developers, and other stakeholders, collecting essential information and providing valuable insights.

We’re looking for someone with a diploma in property assessment or appraisal, or a recent business degree and real estate experience who’s ready to hit the ground running.  Hands-on experience in a municipal assessment environment will give you a leg up.  Proficiency in tools like Microsoft Office Suite, CAMAlot software, CREB, and SPSS will set you apart, along with strong mathematical and statistical skills.  If you're working towards a Professional Assessment or Appraisal Designation with AMAA, AACI, or IAAO, that’s a bonus!

Why should you consider working for us?
Our employees enjoy many benefits including competitive public sector pay, comprehensive health and dental benefits package, professional learning and development opportunities and the opportunity to work with other talented municipal professionals.

As an organization, Cochrane has a focus on investing in people.  This is not a boring municipality.  We are growing into an organization with a focus on transparency, critical thinking, curiosity, reflection and innovation.  We support experimentation as part of the growth process and strive for continuous improvement.  We are municipal employees, and we are accountable to all Cochrane residents. Want to be a part of this exciting time?

We are committed to providing a healthy and safe work environment for all of its employees.  You must take reasonable care to protect your health and safety and that of others present at worksites, perform work safely, follow all relevant health and safety legislation, directives and procedures and attend all identified orientations and training.
